TAYLORSVILLE, N.C., Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A North Carolina middle school teacher was disciplined for showing a music video to students that supports same-sex marriage, officials said.

The teacher, whose name has not been released, showed a group of students rapper Macklemore's music video for his song "Same Love," The Taylorsville (N.C.) Times reported Monday.

"At West Alexander Middle School, there was an inappropriate video shown in class, outside the bounds of the curriculum, that called for disciplinary action last week. That teacher will be back in school this week," said Alexander County Schools Associate Superintendent Dr. Jeff Peal.

Macklemore said the song was was written in support of a Washington state's referendum that was approved in 2012 and legalized same-sex marriage in the state, The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported.

The seven-minute video for the song features a gay couple and a title card at the end that says, "Support Marriage Equality. Approve Ref. 74."
