Man searching for a softball finds wheelchair-bound victim in ditch

Sept. 12, 2013 at 2:35 PM

LOGAN, Utah, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A Utah man searching for a lost softball at a sports complex says he found a wheelchair-bound man stuck in an irrigation ditch and rescued him.

Bart Griffiths, 51, retrieving a softball after it went over a fence at the Willow Park Sports Complex in Logan, Utah, instead found an overturned wheelchair in a stagnant irrigation ditch and a man, face-down in the water, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The unidentified man, 62, had crashed his motorized wheelchair and fallen into six inches of water. It was not immediately clear how long he had been in the water.

"I lifted him up and saw he had cuts on his face," Griffiths said, adding he called 911 and watched for snakes while he awaited police.

The victim survived, but police cited him for public intoxication, the newspaper noted.
