ORIENT, Ohio, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Corrections officers on duty when Ariel Castro -- in prison for the abductions of three Cleveland women -- committed suicide are on leave, officials said.

Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokeswoman JoEllen Smith said Caleb Ackley, 26, and Ryan Murphy, 27, will remain on administrative leave while authorities investigate the circumstances of Castro's death, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported Tuesday.

Castro -- sentenced last month to life in prison plus 1,000 years for the abductions years ago of Michelle Knight, Gina DeJesus and Amanda Berry -- was found Sept. 3 hanging in his cell at a prison facility in Orient, Ohio. In July, he pleaded guilty to 937 charges. He kidnapped and raped the women in his Seymour Avenue home for nearly a decade.

In May, neighbors and police helped rescue the three women, along with the daughter Castro fathered with one of the women. The women were abducted on separate occasions.
