Trooper Paul Butterfield was shot about 6 p.m. in Mason County and died in surgery at a hospital in Traverse City, WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids reported Tuesday.
Witnesses said the shooter and another person inside the stopped vehicle fled the scene.
A motorist in the area called for help about four minutes after the shooting, said state police Lt. Chris McIntire.
Two suspects, a man and a woman, were located about 8:40 p.m. at a store in a neighboring county, McIntire said. The man was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with police, but his injuries were not considered life threatening.
Both suspects were arrested.
Butterfield joined the state police in 1999d and has served at posts in Hart and Manistee.
