"As attorneys general, we have witnessed first-hand the devastation wrought by this epidemic on individuals and communities," said the letter, signed by Attorneys General Pam Bondi of Florida, Jack Conway of Kentucky and Janet Mills of Maine.
The letter, dated Wednesday, urged Kitson to end its line of sport jersey-style T-shirts with prescription drug brand names, such as Adderall, Xanax and Vicodin, imprinted instead of athlete names.
The states' top lawyers said the T-shirts and the marketing tag-line "Pop one on and you'll feel better," indicated the company wasn't interested in education but was a "most cynical effort to profit on the backs of the thousands of lives lost to this epidemic."
"Prescription drug abuse is not fun or humorous," the letter said. "We urge you to pull these shirts from you shelves."
