The killer was identified as Ryan Justin Shallue, 21, of Stevensville on the Eastern Shore, The Baltimore Sun reported. His victims were Kristen Renee Loetz, 20, also of Stevensville, who was reported to be in critical condition at Maryland Shock Trauma, and Charles Jacob Abbott, 19, of Hebron, Md., a small town outside Salisbury.
The shootings took place Tuesday evening in Loetz's apartment near the Salisbury University campus, police said. Investigators said Shallue went to the apartment, got into a violent argument with Loetz and then pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and opened fire when Abbott tried to intervene.
Janet Dudley-Eshbach, the university president, said Loetz is an honors student in the Salisbury nursing program. Shallue and Abbott were not Salisbury students.
"Our prayers and condolences go out to the families and friends of those impacted by last evening's tragic off-campus shooting," she said in a letter sent to students Wednesday. "Sadly, relationship violence is a national issue and our campus is not immune to it."
