UPPER MARLBORO, Md., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Three people were taken to hospital with critical injuries after a small plane crashed along U.S. Route 50 in Prince George's County, Md., authorities said.

The pilot and two passengers were flown by helicopter to trauma centers after the 3:55 p.m. crash, Prince George's Assistant Fire Chief Alicia Francis told The Washington Post.

No one on the ground was injured when the plane struck the tree line next to the westbound lanes of Route 50 and came to rest on the shoulder.

The eastbound lanes reopened about an hour after the crash, but the westbound lanes would remain closed indefinitely while investigators examine the scene, Francis said.

The crash scene is near Freeway Airport in Bowie. It wasn't clear whether the plane was trying to land or had just taken off.
