School principal charged in husband's death

Aug. 30, 2013 at 7:23 PM

BAKERSFIELD, Calif., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- A Bakersfield, Calif., elementary school principal has been arrested on suspicion of murder in the death of her husband, police said.

Leslie Jenea Chance, 46, was arrested Thursday, four days after a farm worker discovered the body of her husband, Todd Chance, in a field northwest of Bakersfield, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Todd Chance, who was 45, had been shot multiple times and his death was ruled a homicide.

Leslie Chance had been away from her office at Fairview Elementary School this week on bereavement leave. Psychologists were assigned to the school Friday, and Greenfield Union School District official Ken Chichester said there were "a lot of emotions, a lot of tears, a lot of confusion" at the school, the Times reported.

Leslie Chance is in her third year as principal at the school.
