11-year-old Florida girl survives shark attack

ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A Florida girl, recovering from a shark bite she received while swimming during the weekend, says it'll be a while before she returns to the water.

Riley Breihan, 11, said she was riding her boogie board at WinterHaven Park in Ponce Inlet Sunday when she stood up and felt something clamp onto her leg, WKMG-TV, Orlando, reported Wednesday.

"At first I wasn't thinking about pain, I was thinking I got bit by a shark and I have to go to the emergency room. Then I felt the sting and it hurt real bad," Breihan said.

A couple of strangers took her to a nearby hospital where doctors found she was bitten in her lower leg and heel. They also recovered a baby shark tooth in her skin.

"They had to numb me and they had to prick it out," Breihan told WKMG.

She said she's keeping the tooth as a reminder of her luck. She also said she won't be going into the water anytime soon.

"I don't think I would go back in the water," Breihan said. "I'm going to wait."
