'Send Pizza' Internet sensation undergoes surgery, will move home

SIMI VALLEY, Calif., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- The 2-year-old cancer patient from California whose story went viral after her mom wrote "SEND PIZZA" in the window of her hospital room will head home soon.

Hazel Hammersley had successful surgery last week to remove a stage-three neuroblastoma, her mom, Laura said.

Hazel's surgeon, David Bliss, said the five-hour operation was a success, but that she still has more procedures ahead, including a stem cell transplant, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, People Magazine reported.

Laura Hammersley used medical tape last year to write "SEND PIZZA RM 4112" on the window of her daughter's hospital room, and said she said she was just trying to bring some lightheartedness to the situation.

But after someone posted a photo of the sign on Reddit, pizzas started arriving at the room, People said.

The story went viral on the Internet, and the family's blog, Our Little Hazelnut, got 70,000 hits in one day, and people around the world have shared well wishes and donations, the family said.
