Man charged with killing his girlfriend's baby son

WAUKEGAN, Ill., Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Bail was set at $5 million Saturday for a Chicago-area man charged with killing his girlfriend's missing 5-month-old son.

While Demetries Thorpe, 26, of Zion appeared before a judge in Lake County, the search continued for Joshua Summeries, the Chicago Tribune reported. More than 200 people, including police officers, were involved in the search of a landfill in Zion, where Thorpe, Summeries and the boy's mother lived.

George Filenko, chief of police in Round Lake and head of Lake County's major crime task force, called the search "worse than a needle in a haystack."

The baby was reported missing Wednesday morning. Police said Thorpe was detained Wednesday evening and confessed to killing the boy.

Thorpe allegedly told police he put his hand over the boy's mouth when he would not stop crying and then dumped the body in a dumpster. Investigators found surveillance camera videotape that showed Thorpe approaching a dumpster with a backpack, the Waukegan (Ill.) News-Sun reported.
