Critics accused Gore of propagating science fiction after the Post quoted him as saying scientists had added a "Category 6" hurricane level in light of climate change, The Hill reported Friday.
In a story Wednesday, Post reporter Ezra Klein quoted Gore as saying, "The hurricane scale used to be 1-5 and now they're adding a 6."
The quote drew immediate criticism from a science blogger.
Jason Samenow, of the Post's Capital Weather Gang, called Gore's purported claim "patently false." He quoted the National Weather Service as saying no such category was being considered.
Gore's staff claimed he had been misquoted and issued a statement Friday with what they said was the correct quote: "The scientists are now adding category six to the hurricane ... some are proposing we add category 6 to the hurricane scale that used to be 1-5."
Klein admitted, "it's entirely possible I missed Gore's qualifying sentence while trying to keep up. If so, that's my fault and I apologize."
Klein added he was out of town and didn't have access to his tape recorder to check the quote.
