Manhunt in New York City for man who assaulted officer, stole car

NEW YORK, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Police say they are searching for a suspect wanted for allegedly assaulting a New Jersey police officer Friday and stealing an undercover police car.

The search is centered in the Harlem section of New York, with police, K-9 units and helicopters aiding in the manhunt, WCBS-TV, New York, reported Friday.

The suspect allegedly assaulted the police officer at a motel in Fort Lee, then drove the car across a bridge into Manhattan and abandoned it, WNBC-TV, New York, said, adding gunfire erupted at the motel but it was not clear who fired the shots.

Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich said three officers received non-life-threatening injuries at the motel.
