BOYNTON BEACH, Fla., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- An 11-year-old girl kept her cool while acting as maternity nurse and translator helping her cousin in a home birth, a Boynton Beach, Fla., dispatcher said.
Boynton Beach police Tuesday released the audio tape of dispatcher Shimeka Rollins, 34, helping Eulalia Pedro as she guided her cousin Candelaria Francisco, 39, and mom Juana Francisco, 47, through the birth Aug. 8, the South Florida Sun Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale reported.
"It's an emergency for a baby," Pedro told Rollin, saying that Francisco was eight months' pregnant. "The baby is trying to come."
During the 7-minute, 39-second 911 call, Rollins learned Pedro was 11 years old and the adults with her didn't speak English, only a Mayan language spoken in Guatemala.
Pedro told the Sun Sentinel Tuesday the baby, named Jose Francisco, was born in a bedroom off the living room while she was on a cellphone in the living room.
About 3 minutes into the emergency call, a noise sounding like baby's cry could be heard as Rollins asked Pedro to ask her cousin if she could feel any pain, the Sun Sentinel said.
"The baby just came out right now," Pedro said in the call.
Pedro said Tuesday she walked into the bedroom and saw that Candelaria Francisco had delivered her son. Pedro said she thought the baby was a doll until he began to cry.
Rollins said in her seven years as a dispatcher she never had a call like this.
"Not at all, not even close," she said.
