Vegas police: Bus driver on synthetic pot started chain collision

LAS VEGAS, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- A tour bus driver who plowed into cars at a red light in Las Vegas, sending 12 people to the hospital, had been smoking synthetic marijuana, police allege.

The Herrera Coaches bus was empty when the driver crashed into vehicles at an intersection about 5:30 p.m. local time Sunday, setting off a chain reaction of collisions before running into a light pole, KLAS-TV, Las Vegas, reported Monday.

Witnesses said the driver attempted to back out and flee, but they detained him until police arrived.

Twelve people were taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Las Vegas police said the driver told them he had been smoking spice. They were investigating to what degree the drug, speed and rain were factors in the crash.
