Report: Mediation could result in San Diego mayor resigning

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Negotiations took place behind closed doors Monday on a deal that could lead to the resignation of San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, sources told KGTV-TV, San Diego.

Filner officially returned to work at city hall Monday while his attorneys took part in a mediation session with City Attorney Jan Goldsmith and Gloria Allred, the lawyer representing some of the women who say Filner made aggressive and unwanted passes at them.

KGTV said two sources inside city hall reported the mediation session was presided over by a retired federal judge and included discussion of a plan under which Filner would leave office.

Filner, a former U.S. congressman and city council member, has so far resisted growing pressure to step down or face a public recall vote. He previously issued a public apology for his boorish behavior and promised to undergo behavior modification therapy.

Recall proponents held a rally at city hall Monday where Carl DeMaio, the Republican who lost to Filner in the mayoral race, scolded San Diego politicians for not being more vocal in supporting a recall or pushing for Filner's resignation.
