MIAMI, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Tropical Storm Erin was hundreds of miles from Cape Verdes Islands Saturday and was expected to weaken in the coming days, U.S. forecasters said.
In its 11 a.m. EDT update, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said said Erin was 815 miles west-northwest of the islands in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, with top sustained winds of 40 mph, and was expected to weaken further in the next day or two. The storm was moving northwest at 12 mph and appeared ready to shift to a west-northwest track later in the day.
Erin rebounded to tropical storm status Friday after being downgraded to a tropical depression, but forecasters said sea and wind conditions in the Atlantic spelled doom for the struggling storm.
"The storm is currently tracking over marginally warm water and will start to move into an air mass that is less moist and more stable than the one it formed in," AccuWeather meteorologist Dan Kottlowski said.
