SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- The wind-whipped Rockport 5 wildfire east of Salt Lake City is gradually being brought under control, fire officials said Friday.
The fire was reported to be 60 percent contained, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.
The fire, started by a lightning strike Tuesday, had burned more than 2,000 acres in an area of upscale houses occupied both as primary residences and vacation homes. Residents of two subdivisions were told late Thursday they could return home, but an official said evacuations were likely to remain in place for two others until Monday.
About 250 families were affected by the evacuation orders.
Summit County Fire Warden Bryce Boyer said eight houses have been gutted by the fire. Boyer said earlier reports 14 homes had been lost came from confusion between houses, trailers and outbuildings.
The State Fire, which has burned more than 25,000 acres in a sparsely populated area near the Idaho border, was also 60 percent contained, officials said.
Sixty miles west of Salt Lake City, firefighters were able to protect homes in Terra, a town in Skull Valley, from the Patch Springs fire, officials said. The fire has consumed 14,000 acres and came within a half-mile of the town.
About 100 miles north of Salt Lake City, the Millville Fire was reported 30 percent contained. The fire was reported to have burned nearly 4,000 acres.
