UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- United Nations humanitarian agencies again voiced concern for lawlessness in the Central African Republic, saying 63,000 refugees have left the country.
In a statement Tuesday, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees noted 206,000 displaced people in the country, and thousands more fleeing to neighboring Chad and Democratic Republic of Congo.
Violence erupted in December 2012 in the Central African Republic when the Seleka rebel coalition launched a series of attacks. After a peace treaty was reached in January the violence began again, prompting President Francois Bozize to leave the country.
U.N. spokesman Adrian Edwards called on the government to "do more to ensure the safety of people and their property, across the country, to prevent further displacement and suffering."
