Teen, 16, killed in flooding in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- A body recovered from a flooded creek in Colorado Springs is that of Rose Hammes, a teenager missing and feared dead, El Paso County officials said.

Hammes, 16, disappeared during an intense rainstorm Monday near her home. Her mother phoned the girl, who had gone out for a walk and gotten trapped in the deluge, and told her to take cover and she would come pick her up but the girl was never found.

Police said Hammes took cover under a bridge near the flooded creek and was likely swept away by the rising current, KKTV, Colorado Springs, said Tuesday.

The El Paso County coroner's office confirmed a body found late Sunday is that of Hammes and she died of drowning and blunt force trauma.

Colorado Springs was the site of a massive mudslide after the heavy rains hit mountains cleared of vegetation by wildfires.
