MOUNT HOOD, Ore., Aug. 13 (UPI) -- A Polish soldier appears to have fallen to his death on Mount Hood while trying to climb Oregon's highest peak alone, police said Tuesday.

The body of Sebastian Kinasiewicz, 32, was located from the air about 10:15 a.m. PDT Tuesday, The (Portland) Oregonian reported. Hood River Sheriff's Deputy Pete Hughes said the body was in an area where large boulders were falling and a recovery effort would not be safe.

Hughes said Kinasiewicz appeared to have been at or close to the summit when he fell hundreds of feet.

The Polish government has been notified of the death. Officials said efforts would be made to recover the body when conditions improve.

Kinasiewicz, in the United States for training with Insitu, a drone manufacturer in Bingen, Wash., left Sunday morning to climb the mountain, his roommate said. He did not leave a climbing plan, which hampered search efforts when he failed to return.

His vehicle was found Monday near a trail head, KOIN-TV, Portland, reported. After the vehicle was found Monday, search teams combed two routes up the mountain without result, and a plane flew over the mountain.

The search resumed Tuesday morning.

Hughes said Kinasiewicz appeared to be a novice climber. He was thought to have had a pack with warm clothing, and an ice axe and crampons, but no equipment for surviving in the open.

The summit of Mount Hood, more than 11,200 feet, is covered with glaciers and snowfields.
