EDGARTOWN, Mass., Aug. 10 (UPI) -- President Obama and his wife Michelle arrived on Martha's Vineyard off Massachusetts Saturday afternoon for a vacation.
The first couple traveled to Cape Cod by way of Orlando, Fla., where Obama addressed the Disabled American Veterans. The presidential helicopter, Marine One, touched down at the airport on the Vineyard about 4 p.m., the Martha's Vineyard Gazette reported.
Air Force One delivered the president to a Coast Guard landing field in Bourne, Mass.
There were crowds, at least by Martha's Vineyard standards, waiting to greet Obama at the airport and at points on the Edgartown-Tisbury Road.
Finn Camper, 12, a summer Vineyard resident who lives in Chevy Chase, Md., the rest of the year, said he is enthusiastic about Obama. He spotted him two years ago from outside Alley's General Store as Obama was driven to his rented house in Chilmark, the same one the Obamas rented this year.
"The president causes a humongous disruption but we're glad they're here anyway," Finn said as he waited for the motorcade outside Alley's.
The Obamas plan to spend eight days on the Vineyard. Their daughters did not accompany them on the flight but a White House spokesman said they would be joining them. Details were not provided.
The president plans no public events during his vacation.
Press secretary Jay Carney said the president would be "working on a full agenda" in addition to receiving briefings while on vacation.
"He'll also continue to, I'm sure, consider some of the issues that he talked about yesterday," Carney said. "But there's nothing specific beyond the broader agenda that he'll be working on.
"He does, obviously, look forward to some down time with his family."
Carney said he didn't know what books Obama intended to read during his vacation.
