Sex offender back in Vermont after housing in California falls through

BURLINGTON, Vt., Aug. 5 (UPI) -- A convicted sex offender released after completing his sentence has returned to Vermont after failing to find housing in California, officials said.

Timothy Szad, 53, had spent a week in California looking for placement after being released from prison in Springfield July 26, the Burlington Free Press reported Sunday.

Szad returned to Vermont Sunday night and was working with law enforcement, clergy and government agencies to find "safe and suitable housing," Colchester Detective Ed Fournier said in a statement.

Szad, who is considered at high risk of re-offending, had been scheduled to live with a relative in Springfield, but that plan was abandoned after public outcry.

He was sentenced in January 2001 to seven to 20 years in prison for the aggravated sexual assault of a 13-year-old disabled boy.

Prison officials said he had been compliant with the sex offender treatment program while incarcerated.
