KAUAI, Hawaii, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- A 54-year-old Seattle man drowned in waters off Lydgate Beach Park on the island of Kauai in Hawaii, a county official said.

Hom Shu became the 14th drowning victim on Kauai this year. He was swimming in Morgan's Ponds when he was found underwater at 7 p.m. local time Thursday, a Kauai County spokeswoman said.

Paramedics transported Shu to Wilcox Hospital where he was initially listed in critical condition, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Sunday, but he died Friday night.

Shu's death was the 14th drowning on Kauai this year, compared with eight on the island last year, most of them involving tourists.

Kauai officials have started showing a water safety video in the baggage claim area of Lihue Airport in response to the increase in drownings, the newspaper said.
