Man gets 10 years for plot to kill abortion doctor

MADISON, Wis., Aug. 3 (UPI) -- A Wisconsin man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for planning to kill a doctor at a Madison abortion clinic, a judge said.

Circuit Judge Nicholas McNamara called Ralph Lang, 65, "a dangerous man," the Wisconsin State Journal reported. McNamara said that in the two years since his arrest Lang has not apologized for his actions.

Lang, a resident of Marshfield, Wis., was arrested after he accidentally fired his gun in his room at a motel near Madison's Planned Parenthood clinic. Police said he told them he planned to find and kill a doctor who performed abortions.

At his trial in May, Lang testified he told police he wished he had a machine gun to "mow down" the entire Planned Parenthood staff. He said nothing during the sentencing Friday.

"You have made choices that now require you to be out of society, out of the community," McNamara said. "You have forfeited your right to live among us."

Lang gets credit for the more than two years he has been in custody. McNamara imposed a 10-year period of supervised release on top of the prison time with restrictions that include staying away from abortion facilities.
