CHICAGO, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. says he intends pay a $750,000 forfeiture in 90 to 180 days, despite the prospect of a prison sentence, a court filing shows.
Jackson, 49, a 17-year member of Congress from Illinois before he resigned in 2012, looted his campaign treasury to purchase luxury items including celebrity memorabilia and mounted elk heads, the Chicago Tribune reported.
He faces a possible prison term when he is sentenced Aug. 14. Federal prosecutors are seeking a term of four years for Jackson, and 18 months for his wife, Sandi Jackson, 49, who will be sentenced the same day for failure to report approximately $600,000 in income on the couple's tax returns.
In the court filing Thursday, Jackson Jr. said he will "make his best efforts" to repay the money. When he and his wife pleaded guilty in February to one felony each, he agreed to repay the forfeiture in full, and she agreed to make restitution totaling $168,550.
