July 30, 2013 at 11:07 PM

ATLANTA, July 30 (UPI) -- An elderly Atlanta-area woman was found Tuesday afternoon, three days after she was reported missing, alive but covered with insect bites.

Eleanor Alexander, 78, who lives near Newman in Coweta County, was taken to the Atlanta Medical Center, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Lt. Col. James Yarbrough of the Coweta County Sheriff's Department said her body temperature had dropped to below 80 degrees, she had been bitten all over by insects and had scratches from walking into a barbed wire fence.

Alexander, who suffers from dementia, was reported missing early Saturday. She apparently wandered off overnight Friday.

Alexander lives alone. Her son is next door and the neighborhood includes many in her extended family.

By Tuesday, volunteers using horses and all-terrain vehicles had joined sheriff's deputies in the search.

"There are a lot of ponds and lakes in the area, and we worried she had fallen or stumbled into one of them," Yarbrough said. "During the middle of the night, we were concerned about animals getting to her."
