Saudi princess ordered to court after missing arraignment hearing

SANTA ANA, Calif., July 29 (UPI) -- A California judge has ordered a Saudi princess to appear in his court in September after she did not show Monday for arraignment on human trafficking charges.

Admitting there were no records ordering the woman to appear at the hearing, Orange County Superior Court Judge Gerald Johnston rescheduled her arraignment for Sept. 20, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"I expect her to be here," Johnston said.

Meshael Alayban, 42, was arrested July 10 and charged with human trafficking by forcing a Kenyan woman to work long hours with little pay.

The Kenyan woman told authorities she lived as a virtual prisoner in the princess' home in Irvine and that her passport had been taken from her and locked in a safe.

After her arrest, Alayban was ordered to wear a GPS tracking device and barred from contact with the victim. Alayban cannot leave Orange County without the court's permission.

If convicted, Alayban faces a possible 12 years in prison.
