Majority now favor same sex marriage nationwide

July 29, 2013 at 5:43 PM   |   Comments

WASHINGTON, July 29 (UPI) -- A majority of Americans favor a national law legalizing gay marriage, a new poll shows.

Gallup said 52 percent of those surveyed said they are in favor of a law legalizing same-sex marriages in all 50 states. Forty-three percent opposed legalizing same sex marriage nationwide when asked how they would vote if such a law were on the ballot in November.

The issue appears to break along religious and political lines. Among self-identified liberals, 73 percent said they favored a national law legalizing gay marriage. Among weekly church-goers, support was just 23 percent. Self-identified conservatives by a margin of 67 percent to 30 percent said they would oppose such a law, Gallup reported.

Gallup noted no statistical variance in the nation's opinion of gay marriage in this, their first survey on the topic since the Supreme Court invalidated the Defense of Marriage Act.

The poll surveyed 2,027 adults from July 10-14. Its margin of error is 4 percentage points.
