Boy remains critical after taking long tumble while hiking in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, July 29 (UPI) -- A Utah boy remained in critical condition Monday after tumbling 200 feet down a rocky slope while hiking near Bridal Veil Falls, police said.

The 11-year-old Orem boy was hiking with his family Sunday when he stumbled on the trail. Witnesses said the boy tried to regain his balance but toppled down the slope below the trail.

The boy suffered head, neck and hip injuries along with a possible broken collar bone, Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon said.

Though police said the area is safe for people of all ages, hikers still need to be careful, The Salt Lake (Utah) Tribune reported.

"The trail up there is generally safe, if you are careful. Hundreds of people will be up there on a given day," Cannon said. "That said, it is easy to take a misstep, and that appears to be what happened with this boy."
