Possible killer bees swarm woman, kill 2 horses in Texas

PANTEGO, Texas, July 27 (UPI) -- A hive of 30,000 suspected Africanized "killer" bees attacked a Texas woman and two miniature horses, killing the animals, officials said.

Kristen Beauregard was working out one of her two horses Thursday at a property in Pantego she rents when a swarm of bees attacked the woman and Chip, a prize miniature horse. When Beauregard was unable to fend off the bees she and the horse jumped into a backyard pool.

That provided little relief, NBC News reported. When she and the horse came up for air the bees would swarm and sting again.

Police said Beauregard, Chip and another horse, Trump, a Shetland pony, were each stung more than 200 times in the apparently unprovoked attack.

Beauregard's boyfriend called 911, and police and firefighters responded and helped the woman escape to safety.

She told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram one horse died later that day and the other died Friday.

Exterminators removed a 6-foot beehive from a backyard shed. Samples were sent for analysis to determine whether the bees were Africanized.

Beauregard said she'd noticed bees on her property and asked the landlord to call an exterminator but the work was never done.
