BOSTON, July 26 (UPI) -- The final prosecution witness against Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger testified Friday he had a large stash of money and weapons when he was arrested.
After FBI Special Agent Scott Garriola described the 2011 arrest of Bulger and his girlfriend, Catherine Greig, prosecutors in federal court in Boston rested their case, the Boston Globe reported. The defense is to start putting on witnesses Monday.
Bulger and Greig had lived quietly in Santa Monica, Calif., for more than a decade under the names Carl and Carol Gasko. But Garriola said agents who searched the apartment found $822,000 and 30 guns concealed in the walls.
"This is the first time I've signed this name in a long time,'' Garriola said Bulger told him when he signed a consent to search form.
The trial began June 12.
One of the most notorious witnesses, Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi, testified for several days this week and last. Flemmi, who is serving a life sentence, described a string of killings he said he committed with Bulger, telling the jury he lured his own girlfriend to her death.
