Man who dropped his appeals executed in Alabama

ATMORE, Ala., July 26 (UPI) -- Alabama has executed a man who asked to die and who death penalty opponents said was mentally ill.

Andrew Lackey, 29, was put to death Thursday by lethal injection at the Holman Correctional Facility, The Birmingham News reported.

Lackey was convicted in 2008 of stabbing Charles Newman, 80, during a robbery at Newman's in Limestone County.

Lackey was a friend of the World War II veteran's grandson.

The execution proceeded quietly, the news said, with Lackey's parents holding hands as they watched their son take his last breaths.

Officials said the parents, Lackey's brother and an aunt who also witnessed the execution, spent time with him earlier Thursday.

"No, sir, I don't," Lackey responded when the warden asked him if he had a final statement.

Lackey dropped all appeals last year. In January, he wrote the court where he was convicted asking if there were steps he needed to take to get the execution on track.

The Equal Justice Initiative released a report that described Lackey as mentally ill and said he had tried at least once to take his own life.
