Coast Guard rescues 9 people after canoe tips over in Puget Sound

PORT ANGELES, Wash., July 23 (UPI) -- Nine people participating in a tribal canoeing event in Washington state were pulled from Puget Sound after their canoe tipped over, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Everyone on board the canoe was rescued Monday, the Coast Guard said. They were transferred to a hospital in Sequim, Wash., and some were found to have mild hypothermia from the frigid water.

The rescue by two Coast Guard response boats took place near Port Townsend on the Olympic Peninsula.

The canoe was participating in the 2013 Intertribal Canoe Journey-Paddle to Quinalt, a reservation on the Pacific Coast of the peninsula.
