Climber dies after fall from Mount Olympus

FORKS, Wash., July 22 (UPI) -- A 28-year-old hiker died after falling on Mount Olympus in Washington's Olympic National Park, officials said.

Richard Grey Liston of Portland, Ore., was climbing the mountain with a friend when he fell Saturday morning onto a rocky area below, the Port Angeles Peninsula Daily News reported.

"Other climbers saw it happen and were able to call it in," park spokeswoman Barb Maynes said Sunday.

One of those climbers -- a paramedic whose name was not reported -- rushed to where Liston fell and reported to emergency services that he had died, Maynes said.

Liston's body was retrieved Saturday evening.

Mount Olympus has an elevation of 7,980 feet and was first successfully climbed in 1907.
