STORRS, Conn., July 15 (UPI) -- A University of Connecticut music professor is under investigation for allegations of sexual misconduct involving children, university officials said Monday.

Robert Miller, 66, was suspended with pay and banned from the campus June 21, but has not been charged with a crime, The Hartford Courant reported.

UConn police began investigating Miller in February although the nature or reason for the investigation was unclear. Documents posted on the university's website said university employees were notified from 2006 to 2011 of allegations Miller had inappropriate sexual contact with children. A department head was reportedly notified of some of the allegations in 2011.

Allegations of sexual misconduct by Miller in the 1990s were uncovered during the investigation by university police. No criminal charges ever were filed.

University officials said in a statement posted on the UConn website they were cooperating with "multiple" law enforcement agencies.

They also are looking into allegations by a student that Miller had sex with university students.

Also Monday, Attorney General George Jepsen opened a search for law firms to assist the university in its investigation.

Miller headed the music department from 1999 to 2003.
