INDEPENDENCE, Mo., July 15 (UPI) -- A thief apparently abandoned the car he stole in Independence, Mo., this weekend after discovering two young children sleeping in it, police said.

The children, both under 11, were unharmed and were soon reunited with their mother, who had left them in the car with the keys while she was checking into a motel, KDAF-TV, Kansas City, reported.

KCTV, Kansas City, reported Independence police received a phone call from the Kansas City, Mo., police department about 45 minutes after the car was stolen early Sunday notifying them it had been found with the children still sleeping inside.

KCTV said police believe whoever stole the car was the one who called them to let them know where it could be found.

No suspects had been found.
