Legislative aide to Rep. Bachmann arrested on theft charges

WASHINGTON, July 15 (UPI) -- A senior legislative aide to U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann has been arrested in an investigation into theft at the Rayburn House Office Building, police say.

Javier Sanchez, 37, of Virginia was arrested Thursday, Roll Call reported Monday.

Politico reported Sanchez's employment with the Republican Minnesota congresswoman's office came to an end the next day.

"As of 7/12/2013, the person in question is no longer with the office," Dan Kotman, a spokesman for Bachmann, said. "Any further questions should be directed to Capitol Police."

Capitol Police public information officer Shennel Antrobus said in a statement a department investigation this year led to the identification of Sanchez as a suspect and his arrest for Theft II, indicating the value was under $1,000.

Roll Call said a senior Washington law enforcement official, who it did not identify, said Sanchez is alleged to have stolen money from Bachmann's office.

Police would not say if Sanchez was in custody of if there was an arraignment date for him, the Washington publication said.

The case was unrelated to other recent burglaries in the Rayburn building, Roll Call said.
