2 dead in jewelry mart shooting

SAN FRANCISCO, July 13 (UPI) -- Police in San Francisco said two women were shot and killed at a jewelry store and a suspect was in custody after shooting at police.

Police did not immediately release the names of the women who were killed, or that of the suspect.

Police also declined to say whether the women were killed in a personal dispute or an attempted robbery, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

"We don't know what relationship the suspect had to the victims," Police Chief Greg Suhr said.

Police responding to a call at 2 p.m. PDT Friday spotted a man covered in blood near the store.

"The officers didn't know whether he was a victim or a suspect," Suhr said.

The man pulled a handgun and opened fire but none of the three responding officers were injured, none fired a shot, and the suspect fled into a restaurant.

When the suspect was out of ammunition "he threw the gun on the ground, went prone and surrendered," Suhr said.

After talking to witnesses, police concluded "this was not the first time [the suspect] had been seen in the building," the police chief said.

The suspect was arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment of superficial wounds, police said.

Police said a third victim inside the jewelry store, a man who may have sustained gunshot wounds, was taken to a hospital for treatment.
