Parents of comatose toddler arrested in suspected abuse

SUGARLOAF, Calif., July 11 (UPI) -- Police in California arrested the parents of a 22-month-old girl who was hospitalized in a coma investigators said was "suspected of being caused by abuse."

The San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner's Department said in a release deputies were called to Bear Valley Hospital Tuesday, where they found the toddler suffering from injuries to her head and body, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The child, whose name was not reported, was taken to Loma Linda University Children's Hospital, where "medical examinations performed by forensic pediatricians ... revealed that the victim had extensive injuries suspected of being caused by abuse," the news release said.

Aaron Wayne Degrise, 18, of Sugarloaf, was arrested on suspicion of torture and assault on a child causing coma. His wife, identified only as a 17-year-old, was arrested on suspicion of willfully causing or permitting a child to be injured.
