WASHINGTON, July 11 (UPI) -- Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker raised $4.6 million in his bid to be the Democratic candidate in a special U.S. Senate election, Politico reported Thursday.

Booker's fundraising total for the year is $6.5 million, as he prepares to run in a primary to be the Democratic nominee in the October special election to replace the late Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg.

Politico said Booker ended the quarter with $4.5 million in the bank.

Booker recently began airing ads in the New York and Philadelphia markets, among the most expensive in the country.

Booker aides said 2,027 of the donations were from New Jersey residents. They said 7,000 contributions were made overall, and 6,000 of those were first-time donors.

The Democratic and Republican special primaries are scheduled Aug. 13. The special election is Oct. 16. The winner of the special election will complete Lautenberg's unexpired term that ends in 2014.
