U.S. announces grants to promote ACA enrollment

WASHINGTON, July 10 (UPI) -- U.S. officials said Wednesday clinics that provide care for poor and uninsured people will receive $150 million to help enroll people for healthcare coverage.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced the grants, which will be distributed among 1,159 community health centers nationwide, to allow the hiring of almost 3,000 people to help advise patients on how to enroll with health insurance exchange marketplaces.

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told reporters the clinics will help as many as 3.7 million Americans enroll.

White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters the grants will help ensure community health centers "have a key role in the process of enrollment."

"In Florida, a health center is hosting learning sessions at local libraries, churches and civil organizations," Carney said. "In Washington state, health centers are coordinating with local schools and libraries to let families know that they may be eligible for new insurance options. A health center in Michigan is coordinating with a coalition of over 30 African-American churches to get the word out and help sign people out."

Carney said community health centers in New Mexico and South Dakota "will be reaching individuals at summer and fall county fairs and rodeos to make sure they know about and sign up for the opportunities available to them in the new marketplaces."
