HERNDON, Va., July 10 (UPI) -- An Iraq war veteran and gun-rights activist who posted a video of himself appearing to load a gun in the U.S. capital faces drug and gun charges, police said.
Adam Kokesh, 31, of Herndon, Va., was arrested after police raided his home under a warrant Tuesday night, The Washington Post reported.
Court papers showed the former Marine corporal, who was being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center Wednesday, was charged with possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms while possessing a firearm, The Washington Post reported.
The newspaper said a Fairfax County court clerk said Kokesh declined to be arraigned or fingerprinted, and sheriff's office Lt. Steve Ebert said a judge went to Kokesh's jail cell to arraign him.
Park Police Lt. Pamela Smith said her department executed a search warrant looking for an unspecified weapon. The Post noted the Park Police's jurisdiction includes Freedom Plaza, the park near the White House where Kokesh filmed his July 4 YouTube video in which he appears to load a shotgun in violation of District of Columbia law.
Smith said she didn't know whether the video was the reason for the search warrant.
"We will not be silent. We will not obey. We will not allow our government to destroy our humanity. We are the final American Revolution. See you next Independence Day," Kokesh said in the video.
Kokesh's website said police in cars and helicopters staged an "armed invasion" of his home.
His five roommates said a SWAT team and about 30-40 police officers pointed guns at them, handcuffed them for 5 hours while they tore apart the premises during their search and a police officer hit one roommate on the back of the head.
"It was a pure act of intimidation," said a roommate identified only as Jeremy.
"We were expecting this. We were expecting the government to raid our house," Darrell Young, another roommate, said.
