WESTWOOD, Mass., July 9 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts woman faces a slew of charges after police said she allegedly attacked her 9-year-old daughter with a set of electric hedge clippers.

Maureen Mullin, 39, of Westwood, Ma., outside Boston, is charged with attempted murder, mayhem, assault and battery on a child with injury, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, Westwood police said. The child's father stopped the attack and called 911, police said.

A second child was in the home at the time of the attack, about 5 a.m. Monday, and was not hurt, The Boston Globe said.

Westwood Police Chief Jeffrey Silva said both the mother and daughter were hurt and paramedics took them to area hospitals.

"The injuries were serious but very luckily are non-life-threatening," Silva said.

It wasn't immediately clear what prompted the attack.
