Man charged after confessing on 'Dr. Phil' show to domestic abuse

OKLAHOMA CITY, July 3 (UPI) -- Prosecutors in Oklahoma say they have filed charges against an Oklahoma City man who confessed on the "Dr. Phil" television show to beating his girlfriend.

Timothy Dean Cruz, 25, faces seven counts of punching, kicking and choking Brittany Roberts between 2011 and 2013, The Oklahoman reported Wednesday.

Cruz admitted on the show, which initially aired in May, he had choked his girlfriend while holding their 6-month-old daughter. Roberts characterized him as "evil, abusive and unfaithful" even though she said she was considering marrying him.

The episode was shown again Monday.

Roberts told police in May she and Cruz had appeared on the show.

In a telephone conversation with Roberts recorded by police, Cruz apologized for physically hurting her. He told her everything he had said on the show was "absolutely 100 percent" true.

The couple's child was taken into state custody in November 2012 because of the abuse, Roberts said on a website she created to raise money to get her daughter back.
