CHICAGO, July 3 (UPI) -- A spate of shootings in Chicago Wednesday left three men dead and five others wounded, police said.

The shootings took place during the afternoon and evening hours on the city's South and West sides, the Chicago Tribune reported.

In the latest instance of gun play, three men were shot shortly before 7:30 p.m. CDT and "self-transported" to a hospital where police spokesman Daniel O'Brien said one of the victims, a 26-year-old, was pronounced dead. A second man, age 18, was in critical condition and the third, a 19-year-old, was in stable condition, he said.

Shortly before 7 p.m., another man, age 24, was shot in the back and died about a half-hour later, the medical examiner's office said.

The third fatality occurred at 1:15 p.m. when a man in his 20s was shot while sitting in a vehicle, police spokesman Michael Sullivan said.

In a 3 p.m. shooting, a 20-year-old man was critically wounded when a bullet struck him in the head, O'Brien said, while a 19-year-old and an 18-year-old were seriously wounded in yet another shooting shortly after 2 p.m.

No arrests had been reported in any of the cases.
