WASHINGTON, July 1 (UPI) -- Freshman U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Nev., underwent a successful cardiac surgical procedure Monday to correct a hereditary condition, his office said.

The statement posted on the congressman's official website didn't reveal details of his condition or where the surgery was performed.

"During a recent routine annual physical, Representative Horsford was advised that he needed non-elective surgery to address a hereditary condition," the statement said. "The congressman and his family feel fortunate that modern diagnostics and preventative medical care were able to identify the condition and effectively treat it. Representative Horsford's doctors expect a full recovery and indicate that after a few weeks of medically mandated recovery, he will be back to 100 percent."

Horsford, 40, is the first person of color to represent Nevada in Congress. He served in the Nevada Senate from 2005 to 2012 where he was the state's first African-American majority leader.
