JOLIET, Ill., July 1 (UPI) -- A gun stolen from the home of a corrections officer in Illinois' Will County was used in a five-day crime spree, a suspect allegedly told police.
Zeeshan Rashid, 19, of Joliet is charged with aggravated battery related to a June 13 shooting near Joliet and attempted armed robbery related to crimes June 15 and 17, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday.
Rashid is also facing charges for the break-in at the county corrections officer's home during which the gun was stolen.
Will County sheriff's spokesman Ken Kaupas said Rashid and two other men, whose names were not reported, allegedly broke into the corrections officer's home while the officer was on vacation and stole a .40-caliber Glock, ammunition, magazines, the officer's body armor and some of his uniform shirts.
The three then went on a crime spree during which the officer's gun and another firearm of the same caliber were used, Kaupas said. Two men were shot and wounded during the spree.
Rashid was arrested by Joliet police June 18.
Rashid allegedly admitted to the crimes he has been charged with, Kaupas said.
The stolen gun had not yet been recovered, Kaupas said.
"You want to recover that weapon because you have to get a gun off the street," he said. "We're very concerned that we have not been able to locate the weapon. You hate to know there's an unaccounted weapon out there."
