Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said "the biggest break" in the case came after several Newark residents who had seen the video said they recognized Custis, described as a career criminal most recently released from prison in December.

Anthony Ambrose, chief of detectives for the prosecutor's office, called the home invasion attack "a horrific and brutal crime."

Superior Curt Judge Thomas Moore set bail at $750,000 for Custis, who is charged with first-degree attempted murder, robbery, burglary and endangering the welfare of a child

In the nanny cam video, a man is seen entering the home, and punching and kicking the woman and pulling her by the hair as her 3-year-old daughter watched. The girl and an 18-month-old boy asleep upstairs were not physically hurt.
