SAN FRANCISCO, June 28 (UPI) -- The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued an order Friday clearing the way for counties to issue same-sex marriage licenses in California.
The court lifted a stay on an earlier injunction and Gov. Jerry Brown immediately directed state officials to notify officials throughout the state to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The U.S. Supreme Court, in a ruling announced Wednesday, effectively let stand 9th Circuit Judge Vaughn Walker's 2010 ruling overturning Proposition 8 -- a 2008 initiative in which California voters amended the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.
Proposition 8 was a reaction to a California Supreme Court ruling that law banning same-sex marriage violated the state Constitution.
County clerks who handle civil marriages said they were ready to issue licenses for same-sex couples, the Times reported.
